1. Advertisement noun [ad-ver-tahyz-muhnt, ad-vur-tis-muhnt, -tiz-]

an announcement in print, broadcast, or electronic media that is paid by for the sale of goods or to publicize an event

◼ Example: The posting of big billboards as part of companies’ advertisements should be regulated.
◻ Note: An advertisement can also be called an ‘ad’ or ‘advert’.

2. Amount noun [uh-mount]

the sum of two or more quantities; quantity or measure

◼ Example: It’s difficult to imagine the total amount of waste we produce every day.

to total or to add up in number or quantity; to be equivalent or to add up in effect

◼ Example: Everything he has done for the company in five years already amounts to a lifetime of service.
◻ Note: Amount is used with mass or uncountable nouns while number is used with countable nouns.

3. Anniversary noun [an-uh-vur-suh-ree]

the annual recurrence of the date of a past event; a celebration that remembers such a date

◼ Example: After 60 years of being married, my mom and dad still celebrate their wedding anniversary.
◻ Note: Anniversary can also be used as an adjective as in ‘anniversary gift’.

4. Attention noun [uh-ten-shuhn]

the act of concentrating the mind on an object; the ability to concentrate mentally; watchful consideration and care

◼ Example: Much attention should be given to children with special needs.
◻ Note: Is it easy for you to pay attention to what is being discussed?

5. Avenue noun [av-uh-nyoo, -noo]

means of access or of attainment

◼ Example: I consider my new job to be an avenue for professional growth.
◻ Note: This word is also used in the names of certain wide roads or streets.

6. Average noun [av-er-ij, av-rij]

mid-level or degree; norm or typical amount, rate, degree, etc.; typical, common or ordinary

◼ Example: She’s a fabulous woman. I don’t know why she settled for a man who's average.
◻ Note: What’s the average marrying age in Japan?

7. Boss noun [baws, bos]

a person who employs or supervises workers; the one who has the authority to make decisions

to manage, direct or control; to give orders in a dominant manner

◼ Example: The boss in his company is strict in implementing policies.
◻ Note: What does a boss do?

8. Cloth noun [klawth, kloth]

a material or fabric that is formed by weaving, knitting, pressing, or felting natural or artificial fibers and used for garments, upholstery and many other items

◼ Example: We bought different kinds of cloth in Thailand for our clothing line.
a piece of such a fabric or material that is used for a particular purpose

◼ Example: We need to buy a new cloth for the table for your birthday celebration.
◻ Note: Can you buy cheap cloths in your country?

9. Corner noun [kawr-ner]

the place at which two lines, surfaces or edges meet forming an angle; pertaining to the area that is enclosed or bound by an angle that was formed

◼ Example: She found her key at the corner of their house.
a position or situation that is threatening or embarrassing from which escape is difficult

◼ Example: In the heat of the debate, she found herself in the corner upon giving a false statement.

◼ Example: I saw her standing by the newsstand on the corner.
a thing that is designed for use in a corner

◼ Example: I bought a corner table at the furniture shop.
◻ Note: ‘Corner’ can also be used as a verb which means to drive into a corner: The fugitives were cornered by the police.

10. Costume noun [kos-toom, -tyoom]

a style of dress that includes garments, accessories and hairdos that have the characteristics of a particular country, period, people or theme; clothes suitable for a particular occasion

◼ Example: A well-known international designer designed her national costume for the competition.
◻ Note: Have you ever worn a costume before?
