In literal translation, taiko means great or wide drum. However, outside Japan, it refers to any of the Japanese drums and any art-form related to taiko. It was said in mythology that it was started by a shaman-like female deity. In warfare, taiko were used to motivate troops, to help the pace of the soldier's marching and to call out orders. In these days, taiko can also be seen in other countries. The international show, Cirque du Soleil, features taiko drumming.
